Several fellow translators complain about the unfair behaviour of some companies, and I agree with their complaints. That's why I decided to give my two cents.
In my opinion, a translation test has to meet two basic requirements:
1. Ideally, it should be about 500 words.
In some cases, perhaps for more creative writing, it should not exceed 1,500 words.
2. No hurry! The translator can ask for a whole week to complete it.
If a translation test doesn't meet these requirements, then you must either drop it or charge for that translation.
